Introduction

Environmental Sciences Research Institute (ESRI) has been founded in 2000 in response to the great demand that existed in the country to conduct scientific studies and research in the area of environment, to help achieve the mission of the university in science production and extension, to develop deep understanding about the interaction between human, nature and environment, to re-study/identify environmental challenges, and to provide realistic solutions to the environmental and agricultural problems and issues at national and sub-national levels. The ESRI has five departments, including Planning and Design of the Environment, Biodiversity and Ecosystems Management, Economy, Education and Policy of Environment, Environmental Technologies, and Agroecology.
Its outstanding, willing and efficient experts and staff on one side and its unique and multidisciplinary nature on the other side have made the ESRI a reference for policy- and decision-making at national level. A considerable share of fundamental and applied studies in the area of environmental sciences in the country is being conducted by the ESRI. Also, the institute has very good scientific collaboration with national and international organizations and institutions. Covering a wide range of scientific disciplines, suitable infrastructure and conducting high-quality research with great impact have differentiated the ESRI from other similar research institutes in the country. The mission of the ESRI is to conduct fundamental, applied and developmental studies in order to respond to environmental challenges nationwide to help achieve sustainable development in the country.
Improving the environmental culture, conducting demand-driven studies and presenting their results to various stakeholders including policy-makers, scientists and researchers, and industry and society managers, improving the current international position of Iran regarding key environmental indices, fulfilling sustainable and adaptable to environment economic development, controlling and reducing pollutants and their devastating impacts on the environment, achieving modern environmental technologies and their domestication, developing and applying environmental standards and regulation in the country, and training competent researchers in various areas of environment are among the major goals of the ESRI.
